Ima Project Cafe
A Japanese inspired cafe with a bit of a sustainability and minimal wastage focus. The menu has many classic dishes with a modern twist - baked eggs in miso tomato sauce, avocado toast with nori paste, furikake and kale to name a few.
MATCHA LATTE $5
Bright green, with just a slightly bitter and lingering sweet aftertaste. Perfect matcha!
.
AVOCADO TOAST $17 + ONSEN EGG $3.50
The nori paste and kale provided a refreshing new taste to the classic avocado toast dish. Add an onsen egg for that runny egg texture and yolky flavour.
JAPANESE BREAKFAST $22 + ONSEN EGG $3.50
A well balanced breakfast with grilled salmon, tamagoyaki, onsen egg (add-on), pickles, greens, miso soup and rice.
Very impressed with the quality of the rice, it was smooth and shiny with soft fluffy texture - as expected of Japanese rice. The serving size of the grilled salmon appears small, however the protein from the eggs made it filling. Miso soup was clear and lightly flavoured. The tamagoyaki was savoury rather than sweet.
JAPANESE LUNCH SET $22 + ONSEN EGG $3.50
The lunch set had tonkatsu as the dish of the day. The tonkastu was quite tasty with a a medium crunchy coating, and decent meat (but not the best).
NASU DENGAKU $5
The eggplant had a generous coating of the sauce, which was on the saltier side. It was cooked thoroughly which made the flesh super soft and juicy. Definitely one of my top nasu dengakus I've had in Melbourne. I'm happy with the price point too as they usually go for $9 for a full size, but a half size is enough to satisfy the cravings.
Yes I get nasu dengaku cravings.
While I'm skeptical of the whole ugly veggie movement, I'm very happy with finding another Japanese type cafe in Melbourne that serves this kind of home-style simple breakfast.
I rate this experience: 5/5
