Il Caminetto

Il Caminetto is a local Moonee Ponds Italian eatery offering authentic and homemade dishes at a reasonable price. The menu has a huge variety of starters, mains, sides, desserts and even simpler options for kids.

Naturally I wouldn't pass up the opportunity seeing an eggplant parmaggiana on the menu! The layers of eggplant were thoroughly cooked through with layers of mozarella giving a creamy and cheesey flavour with an incredibly robust tomato sauce.

The Capesante was a very simple dish that made the most of utilising fresh ingredients and culinary skills. The charring accentuated the natural flavour of the fresh tender Canadian scallops, paired with creamy cauliflower puree, and fish croquettes fried to perfection.

Seppie alla veneziana is a dish comprised of cuttlefish in black ink sauce with polenta. The cuttlefish was tender and flavoursome, however can be salty on it's own, which is where the polenta comes in to balance out the strong flavour.

Spaghetti integrali al granchiom, a dish of wholemeal pasta with spanner crab, zucchini, garlic, basil and tomato confit. Despite it being wholemeal, it was rather soft, and the sauce had mild flavour with a lot of depth from the variety of ingredients.

The highlight of the dining experience was hands down, the Sicilian pizza! The pizza is cooked using a woodfire oven which brought out the best crispy texture and toasty aroma, topped with a generous amount of mozzarella, spinach, pancetta, roasted potatoes and onions which evenly covered the pizza so there were no boring bits. The potato was well cooked through and the pancetta added a bit of saltiness to the pizza.

I would love to come back again as the price is very affordable for such a amazing quality feed!
